Sony’s ‘The Last Guardian’ Is On Hiatus. Update: Maybe Not?
E3 is ruined.
We all patiently watched Sony’s E3 press conference on Monday with the hope that after years of silence, we’d finally hear new details on Team Ico’s follow-up to the incredible Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian. The game was first announced with a breathtaking teaser video back in 2009, and has scarcely been mentioned since.
No new details came during the conference, but in an interview with GameTrailers, Sony’s Jack Tretton confirmed the disappointing truth that we won’t be seeing The Last Guardian any time soon. Tretton stated: “I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams. Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it’s on hiatus right now.”
There you have it. If you were still hoping we’d see something from the title at E3, or any time later this year, you can put those hopes to rest. Rewatch The Last Guardian‘s debut trailer below, and let us know how you feel about the news.

Update: Kotaku has more information from Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios. Yoshida has issued an update to Tretton’s statement, lettings us all know that “The game is in active development. [Lead designer Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed. My answer is, ‘Yes, the game is in active development.’ It’s not hiatus at all. But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait.”
I’ll believe it when I see it. What do you think?
