Sir Ian McKellen Has Been Living With Prostate Cancer For Over Half A Decade! UPDATE: Maybe Not!
We all know and love Ian McKellen. From Gandalf to Magneto, the knighted star has touched our geek hearts in a way that few others ever have. The guy is perfect in every role he is chosen for, and from every encounter, seems to simply be an extremely nice guy.
In a Daily Mirror interview published today, McKellen revealed the surprising fact that he has prostate cancer and has been living with it for the past six or seven years. With so many people falling victim to the disease every year, it was relieving to hear that McKellen’s case is luckily not life threatening.
If I heard the news that I had prostate (or any) cancer, I’m sure that I would take it much, much worse than McKellen’s surprising strong stance on the disease, as during the interview he stated:
“When you have got it you monitor it and you have to be careful it doesn’t spread. But if it is contained in the prostate it’s no big deal.”
Check out the full interview over at The Daily Mirror. Of course, all of us at Geekscape wish McKellen the best at his ongoing battle.
UPDATE: According to McKellen’s agent, this story is simply not true. “No, he does not have prostate cancer. … That was taken out of context and from an interview from years ago,” Chris Andrews stated just hours after the interview was published.
Wonderful news if this turns out to be the case! We can only hope that the interview in fact was taken out of context, and that the venerable performer is doing just fine!
