Geekscape’s PS4 Unboxing and First Impressions!

After watching the PS4 All Access Launch Event at work last night (where Uncharted for PS4 and The Last of Us DLC were revealed), I braved the cold Canadian darkness to wait in line at my local Wal Mart. By the time that midnight rolled around, about 50 people who weren’t smart enough to pre-order (myself included) were let in, and the first PS4’s in Nanaimo, BC were sold.

I drove home with the best of intentions. I’d arrive, take some unboxing photos, turn the unit on, and get downloading (updates and games, of course), but instead… I went to bed.

Now it’s Friday afternoon, and I’ve finally taken it out of the box.

Here are my unboxing photos, and first impressions on the feel of the hardware. Feel free to add me on PSN (whenever it starts to work again) at CaptainK17, and be sure to let us know your thoughts on the console!

Classy, simple looking box (which is much smaller than the box that my slim PS3 came in)

IMG_1603

Inside is another, nearly identical box! It’s like a Russian doll!

Carefully cutting… I like my boxes intact!

Things are a little messy inside.

The controller is a lot smaller than it looks in photos, and feels substantially more comfortable than the Dualshock 3… it’ll be tough to go back and play PS3 games now! I couldn’t have imagined how much the longer handles and concave analog sticks would feel! The headphone jack is also much appreciated, and game audio can even be routed through them!

There’s one of my massive mitts holding the controller… yep, it still feels great!

There’s the quick-start guide… if you’re into that kind of thing.

Cables galore. The unit includes a power cable (same one as the PS3), an HDMI cable, a micro-USB cable for charging the Dualshock 4, and a mono headset for voice-chat!

It’s nice that Sony included a headset, but it doesn’t feel as though it’ll last very long. I feel like one accidental pull could snap the thing in half. It is lightweight and comfortable however, and does include a clip for your shirt!

I kind of thought that the console was ugly upon its announcement, but it actually looks pretty great in person. It also felt perfectly stable standing vertically without the stand… though I’ll probably still get one just to be safe. The PS4 logo itself is nice and sleek, and not gaudy at all like the original PS3 (blech).

It looks pretty great whether vertical or horizontal.

That’s it! Let us know if you plan to pick the console up, or whether you’re waiting for a must-have game! Have PS4 questions? Tweet them to @geekscapedotnet, and we’ll be happy to answer!
