Teabag Prevention: How to Suck Less at Gears of War 2: Vol.1 – Horde – Day One

Gears of War 2 Tips Vol. 1

Horde: Gears of War 2’s most prized game mode. Things can get tough out there – that is, if you’re not a wuss and are playing on hardcore. You see, Hardcore puts the fun in. It adds the intensity. If you’re not playing Hardcore, you’re playing softcore, and what does softcore show you other than boobs? Nothing. Enough of that. This is for all y’all Hardcorers out there. *L.L. TIP #1 – BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO

Now, Day One is easily the best map to complete Horde on. The first 30 or so waves will be easy as long as you work as a team. The first part of the phases requires two or three of you to branch off from the rest of the lot.

That means that yes, like most white people in movies, you will decide to “split up” when monsters become involved.

Two Groups:

Arcade:

Regency:

The reason for this is simple: It splits the Locusts apart so that they’re easier to kill. If you’re wondering who to send where, measure it by skill at the game. Send the two worst people with the best, or send all of bad people and leave the two best with each other. It’s up to you as a team. Personally, I like to level it out, so you have each crappy person with a good one. That means you have two people carrying your team, which is fine, but if you send those two scared, crappy guys out to the Arcade alone, then they will probably die (in the game) and pee (in real life).

TIP #2 – TOYS (STARRING ROBIN WILLIAMS)

Mortars and the Hammer of Dawn should be used efficiently. DON’T waste them. Only use both on groups of Locusts. Not gangs, but GROUPS. “Hordes”, if you will. Larger groups should be your only excuse to crack these bad boys out, because, much like the bombs in Galaga, you need to space these effers out and plan accordingly. Use wisely.

This is crucial because it dwindles the enemy number down to where weapons like the Longshot and Torque Bow can pick off the rest. The Hammer of Dawn and Mortar switch off at the Regency balcony.

The Longshot and Torque Bow switch off above the arcade.

TIP #3 – HORDE-ING AMMO FOR THE WINTER

Ammo boxes spawn on the streets. They should not be sought after until the end of a wave and while the person(s) retrieving them have covering fire. Eventually, the squad must reunite (in the game) and then kiss (in real life – we don’t make the rules). Reuniting should happen as the waves get more difficult, which is at about, again, wave number 30 or so. Getting ammo before this, or on the way to the next destination is also a good idea. Always be aware of your ammo inventory. It’s your life. It’s now or never.

Heading to the Arcade balcony would be the right way to go. It’s easier to secure and arguably has more cover than the Regency.

TIP #4 – ONE FOR ALL

On the Arcade balcony, there lies cover where no Boomer can reach you. This should be used as the the last stand. You’re able to fight off any Locust, other than the Beastriders. Just be weary of flames and such. Flames are hot and they will hurt you. Bullets and Locust attacks also hurt.

If you’re starting to grow doubtful of your crappy, waning, and fair-weathered team, sticking to that last stand isn’t a bad idea. You’re also able to kill everyone you have sight of, it just might take a while, since you’ll be alone (in both the game and real life). At the same time, you can have others watching the corner for enemies peaking around. This is easy enough for your team mates. Lead, baby, lead!

Just make sure, while all this is going on, when someone gets ammo and gets downed, you all make a team effort to pick this brave scout up off the ground and help him walk it off. The loss of one can greatly decrease your chances of all of you making it through. Sadly, you’re really depending on these assholes – whoever you get matched up with.

TIP #5 – SHE LIKE TO BOOM

The Boom Shield should be your top priority, other than staying alive and keeping your teammates alive. Placing it at the end of the balcony, blocking off the stairs, is your best option. This gives you the most peace of mind so you can kill in peace. The later waves will have you busy, but this little guy is amazing insurance.

But once all hell breaks lose, you must retreat to your safe spot. If you don’t you’ll have to start the wave over and you’ll lose all your weapons and shields. We don’t want that, do we?

Things to Remember

  • Work as a team.
  • Split up to make the most efficient use of your time and efforts.
  • Always help a fallen teammate.
  • Focus fire on one enemy to another. Spread-out fire can be weak and take longer…and get you killed.
  • Make use of the Boom Shield and other weapons that drop.
