Geekscape Lost Recaps – Ab Aeterno
I hope last night’s episode was as satisfactory for you as it was for me. Finally. Let me remind you that these articles are written for the Lost fan. What this means is that you must have at least SOME knowledge about the entire series in order to understand what is written here, otherwise you’ll just be confused. So here’s what you may have missed and what was important in last night’s episode, Ab Aeterno.
First off, Ab Aeterno is latin for from the beginning, or eternity.
Ilana
When we first encounter her in her flashback, she is covered in bandages. Tonight, we saw that soon after Jacob met her and discussed her upcoming mission, Ilana was completely healed.
Hurley
Early on in the episode, Hurley is shown speaking Spanish to what we later find out to be Richard’s wife. What he told her was, “I can’t find them.”
Magnus Hanso
Magnus Hanso was captain of the Black Rock. Years later, Widmore is seen purchasing a painting of the Black Rock, whose previous owner was a man named Tovard Hanso. Why is the name Hanso important?
Back in the 60’s, a man named Alvar Hanso founded The Hanso Foundation. Their purpose? To “reach out to a better tomorrow.” One of the main projects The Hanso Foundation helped create was The Dharma Initiative, and I’m sure you all know what that is.
What’s also important to note here is the Valenzetti Equation, a mathematical equation created to predict the extinction of human beings. The numerical values of this equation are: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. Surprised?
The Man in Black and Richard
After the shipwreck, the Man in Black knew who Richard was and how gullible he was. In an effort to manipulate him, the first thing Man in Black did was remove Richard’s necklace.
The second thing he did was toy with Richard’s emotions and state of mind by appearing to be his wife, Isabella.
Notice that when she talks to Richard about the Smoke Monster, she explains that when she looked into it, what she saw was evil. This is exactly the opposite of how Locke describes the Smoke Monster.
And don’t forget that the Smoke Monster scanned Richard, just as it did with Locke, Ben, and Eko.
After touching Richard’s shoulder, just as Jacob would have done, The Man in Black asked Richard to help him just as he asked Locke to help in The Man Behind the Curtain.
The Dagger
Also, the awesome-named Jacob seemed pretty upset that Richard wielded the dagger. Is it possible that only certain weapons can kill the Man in Black and Jacob? Also, if you didn’t catch it before, Dogen’s speech to Sayid about killing the Man in Black was the same speech the Man in Black told Richard before sending him off to kill Jacob.
