A Geekscape Lost Final Season, Episode 3 Recap – The Substitute

Tonight’s episode really took off. I have to say, this has been my favorite one so far. But enough with the obvious, let’s take a look at what was not so obvious to most people…

Locke’s Life

You’d think that, along with everyone else’s life except Charlie, Locke’s life would be awesome. At first, it is. Then, it isn’t. Locke still remains angry, even though he’s not alone. Locke has not changed much, if at all. He still has his sense of independence. Also, was it me or was the shot of him getting rained on by the sprinklers reminiscent of him getting rained on by rain in the first episode? Rained on by rain. You heard it here, folks.

Helen

Helen is still the same Helen we knew way back when. She talked about everything short of taking a “leap of faith.” Other than that, she seems like everything Locke wanted in the universe we’re used to (the original “multiverse”)

Smoke Monster

In this episode, we saw a sequence with a POV (point of view) of the Smoke Monster. Now, after its Jurassic Park-esque island tour, it stopped outside a window. Right after, it cut to the jungle, not far from Richard. Was he in two places at once? Or did he teleport? Or was it just cut that way? Another unanswered question from Lost!

Locke’s Job

Randy was still the same person. We got that. What was absent was Locke’s friend as well as his old, and I mean really old, computer. It was almost as if this universe is in 2010. Earlier, Helen mentioned his dad with pleasant words. In Locke’s cubical, you can clearly see a photo with Locke on his hunting trip with his father. Does this mean Locke forgave him, or maybe became paraplegic by other means? Is Locke friends with his father in this new universe? If so, how/why?

Richard

My question is, will Richard take Jacob’s place? It seemed as if he was guarding Jacob, almost as if he was to become the island’s protector one day. Obviously, he made a choice, one of the three Non-Locke (this is what we’re calling Smoke Monster Locke) mentioned towards the end. Non-Locke wants him to escape the island with him, but it’s not clear why.

Kid in the jungle

What stood out the most was the fact that the kid was dressed in “Others” attire. We know now that it was all an act by Ben’s group. But this wasn’t an act at all. The kid seemed to know the down low. After all, he did say, “You know the rules. You can’t kill him.”

Other than that, who else was creeped out by his stance? Little kids always stand scary when we don’t know who they are.

Non-Locke

First off, Non-Locke seemed to have pretty bad bruises on his head, maybe to symbolize weakness. Another thing that struck a chord was the fact that Non-Locke shouted out Locke’s most memorable demand: “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!” This could only mean that Non-Locke has some Locke in him. A consequence of taking over a person’s being? Maybe the smoke monster is losing control. I smell a deus ex for the last episode…

Cliffside Ruins

Once the Man in Black’s home, now a cave of answers. He’s won the battle, but why does he need Sawyer to escape?
