How Halo 3: ODST Falls into Halo’s Timeline
Enter Halo 2. Master Chief has just arrived to Earth after a long battle with the Covenant and Flood on Halo Installation 04, ultimately destroying it. By this time, we know that the Covenant have launched a holy war on the Human race. Their “Gods” are an extinct species called the Forerunners. The Forerunners are responsible for all seven Halo installations, which were built to contain the Flood. So, when the Prophets, Covies leaders, learned of the destruction of Halo Installation 04, they were pissed.
In order to pick up where they left off, the Prophets lead their Covies on a search for even more “religious artifacts.” This brings us to the events preceding Halo 2. While out searching the galaxy for more Forerunner artifacts, the Prophet of Regret accidently stumbles upon Earth.
With a collective “OH SHIT!”, the UNSC scrambles everything they have to the central point of the Covenant invasion of Earth. This takes us to New Mombasa, Africa. The reason they chose this place remains unknown until the events of Halo 3.
Master Chief fights on the front lines of the Covenant invasion with Marines and ODST’s alike. When both sides appear to be running out of reinforcements, The Prophet of Regret decides to give Earth one last “FUCK YOU!!” and goes into slipspace in the center of New Mombasa, destroying everything in it’s wake.
The Master Chief, Johnson, and Miranda Keys play tag-along to the tail end of the Prophet of Regret’s ship in an effort to follow him. Meanwhile, a wave of ODST reinforcements drops into New Mombasa. Here, you witness the destruction of New Mombasa by the power of slipspace.

Now you take the role as an ODST defending the Earth in Master Cheif’s absence.
